Courses

Our laboratory is actively involved in education at the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering and the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture of Ghent University and teaches several courses:

Applied Marine Ecology

Course numbers: I002535

Teaching language: English

Lecturers: Prof. Dr. Colin Janssen; Dr. Ilias Semmouri

Synopsis:

Marine Ecology aims at describing and illustrating the fundamental concepts and general processes governing marine ecosystems. In the theoretical course, the interactions between the abiotic factors and the structure and function of marine ecosystems are reviewed in detail. The practicals on the other hand are focussing on the systematics and auto- and synecology of the different groups of marine organisms. The practical exercises are supported by field excursions and case studies. The integration of the theoretical and practical aspects of marine ecology give the student an in-depth, experience-oriented knowledge of this scientific field.

Environmental Risk Assessment

Course numbers: I002606

Teaching language: English

Lecturers: Prof. Dr. Colin Janssen, Prof. Dr. Karel De Schamphelaere,  Prof. Dr. Jana Asselman, Dr. Violaine Verougstraete

Synopsis:

The aim of this course is to introduce the students into the theoretical foundations of (eco)toxicology of chemicals and in the principles of exposure, effects and risk assessment of chemicals to man and the environment. A strong focus is on understanding how different physical, chemical, biological and ecological processes contribute to chemicals exposure, effects and, ultimately, risk. Finally, the various aspects of the theory will be brought into practice by means of hands-on training into exposure and effects testing in the laboratory ('practicum'), quantitative (real-life) chemicals risk assessment ('PC exercises'), and a group work.

Risk assesment of chemicals

Course number: I630055

Teaching language: English

Lecturers: Prof. Dr. Karel De Schamphelaere

Synopsis:

This course focuses on the potential dangers and risks of the production and use of chemicals on human beings and the environment. Students will learn to assess environmental and health risks as well as physical risks (e.g. explosion hazard) and
translate this into appropriate measures based on current legislation and standards.

Quality Management and Risk Analysis

Course number: I001750

Teaching language: English

Lecturers: Prof. Dr. Karel De Schamphelaere, Prof. Dr. Liesbeth Jacxsens; Prof. Dr. Pieter Spanoghe

Synopsis:

The objective of the course is to introduce the concepts of quality management and risk analysis, which are important topics in future careers of bioscience engineers in production companies or organisations in the agro-food chain. This course broadens up the world of bioscience engineers to understand  how a quality management system supports a production process. A general introduction to risk analysis and its compounds risk assessment, risk communication and risk management is also given. Focus is both on impact on human health (due to intake via food or direct contact with chemicals – human risk assessment) and impact on the environment (ecological risk assessment). The concepts of risk analysis and quality management are further technically explored and illustrated during the modules.
